"Why Did She Get Fired for Refusing to Endorse Splenda-Filled Salads to People with Diabetes?"

Elizabeth Hanna, a registered dietitian, filed a lawsuit against the American Diabetes Association (ADA) alleging that the organization pressured her to endorse recipes containing Splenda, despite her belief that they were unhealthy for people with diabetes. The lawsuit paints a picture of an organization influenced by corporate sponsors, with allegations that the ADA prioritizes financial interests over the well-being of the 127 million Americans with diabetes or pre-diabetes. The lawsuit also highlights concerns about the ADA's nutritional advice and its ties to corporate entities, such as Splenda and the Idaho Potato Commission.

"The Effectiveness of Low-Carb Diets vs. Insulin Push by the American Diabetes Association"

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has been criticized for prioritizing insulin and pharmaceuticals over low-carb diets in the treatment of diabetes, despite evidence showing the effectiveness of low-carb diets in reversing the condition. Critics argue that the ADA's ties to pharmaceutical and food industries may influence its recommendations, leading to a lack of emphasis on diet-based approaches. The ADA's close relationship with industry has raised concerns about conflicts of interest and the organization's commitment to prioritizing the health of people with diabetes.

"Revamped Guidelines for Diabetes Lab Tests Unveiled"

The American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and American Diabetes Association (ADA) have released new guidelines on laboratory measures in the diagnosis and management of diabetes. The guidelines aim to assist clinicians and laboratory professionals in making decisions regarding the use and interpretation of laboratory tests for screening, diagnosing, and monitoring patients with diabetes. The recommendations include the use of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in certain populations, consideration of test limitations, and the importance of accurate handling of blood samples. Other recommendations cover fasting glucose measurement, blood glucose monitoring, treatment goals, and testing for albuminuria. The guidelines also address ketone testing, genetic markers, autoimmune markers, and C-peptide.

ADA Recommends Screening for Fatty Liver in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) now recommends universal screening of people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes for fatty liver disease and provides new recommendations for management in those with the condition, or who are at risk for it. Liver disease affects up to 70% of people with type 2 diabetes, and is common in people with prediabetes, and in those with type 1 diabetes who also have obesity. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common form of liver disease in people with diabetes. The recommended screening tool is the fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4), a calculation that includes the patient’s age, liver enzyme levels, and platelet counts. Lifestyle modification is recommended for all adults with diabetes or prediabetes and NAFLD, particularly those with overweight or obesity. In addition, the ADA now advises consideration of a using a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonist with demonstrated benefits in NAFLD as adjunctive therapy to lifestyle interventions for weight loss in those with type 2 diabetes, particularly with overweight/obesity.

ADA recommends screening for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in all diabetes patients.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that all adults with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes should be screened for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to serious liver damage. GLP-1 treatments, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, are singled out as an option doctors could consider, as they have been shown to lower blood sugar and cut weight. However, there are no approved medications for the disease, and there is still limited data on the efficacy of GLP-1s in fatty liver disease.
