Amateur Radio Bridges Space and Earth for Kids

Amateur radio has been connecting astronauts with the public since 1983, when astronaut Owen Garriott first communicated from space using this technology. The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, managed by a consortium of international space agencies and amateur radio organizations, facilitates educational connections between astronauts and students worldwide. ARISS has conducted around 1,700 educational contacts, engaging thousands of youths annually. Future initiatives include expanding educational activities to lunar missions and developing new technologies like the CAVIAR system for lunar exploration.

"Reviving the Pager with Python and Mastodon"

A project using Python and Mastodon has revived pagers for modern use, allowing them to receive message alerts from Mastodon via the Decentralized Amateur Paging Network. Despite the prevalence of smartphones, this setup adds an old-school cool factor to communication and demonstrates the continued relevance of pagers in certain niche applications within the amateur radio community.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Eclipses: Amateur Broadcasters Investigate Radio Wave Anomalies

Amateur radio enthusiasts are teaming up with scientists to investigate the effects of solar eclipses on radio transmissions. Solar eclipses have been known to impact radio signals, and the amateur radio community is planning to conduct a large-scale experiment during the upcoming American eclipses in October 2023 and April 2024. By monitoring their experiences and sharing data with scientists, these volunteers aim to contribute to our understanding of the ionosphere and how it fluctuates during cosmic events. The experiment will provide valuable insights for improving radio communications during emergencies and satellite operations.

Astronomy Enthusiasts Observe Meteor Showers.

The UK Meteor Beacon Project is using amateur radio operators and amateur radio astronomers to research more about meteors as they interact with the atmosphere. A large radio beacon broadcasts a signal in the six-meter band which is easily reflected back to Earth off of meteors. Specialized receivers can pick up these signals, and are coordinated among a network of other receivers which stream the data they recover over the internet back to a central server. With this information, the project can determine where the meteor came from, some of the properties of the meteors, and compute their trajectories by listening for the radio echoes the meteors produce.
