Chinese-Owned Seed Company in Arkansas Ordered to Sell Land Holdings by State Authorities

Syngenta Seeds, a subsidiary of China National Chemical Company (ChemChina), has been ordered by the Arkansas Attorney General to divest its ownership of 160 acres of agricultural land in Craighead County within two years. The order is in response to Acts 636 and 758, which prohibit certain foreign parties from acquiring any interest in Arkansas agricultural land and ban government contracts with the Chinese Communist Party. Syngenta released a statement expressing disappointment and emphasizing that no one from China has directed any Syngenta executive to engage in land acquisition in the United States. The company argues that the divestment will negatively impact the U.S. agricultural market and hurt Arkansas farmers.

Ukraine's food exports face bans and restrictions from EU nations.

Hungary has temporarily banned the import of honey and certain meat products from Ukraine, along with 25 other products, until June 30, due to a glut of Ukrainian agricultural products on the Hungarian market. The government will also monitor shipments of those products coming from third countries to ensure they aren't from Ukraine. Hungary's move follows similar steps taken by Poland, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, which have banned food imports from Ukraine. The EU has proposed an initial support package of 56.3 million euros for the most affected farmers in the front-line countries. Hungary will also require grocery chains to offer discounts on various food products to curb the country's 47% yearly increase in food prices, the highest in the EU.

Ukraine's Grain Exports Face Bans and Plummeting Demand.

Hungary has temporarily banned the import of honey, meat, and 25 other Ukrainian products, including grains, oil seeds, flour, and cooking oil until June 30, to relieve market pressures on Hungarian farmers. The government will also monitor shipments of those products coming from third countries to ensure they aren't from Ukraine. Hungary's move follows similar steps taken by Poland, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, which argue that their agricultural sectors have been hurt after the EU lifted duties on Ukrainian grain to ease exports when Russia's war choked off shipments through traditional routes.
