Barron’s argues artificial intelligence is turning aerospace and manufacturing into potential stock winners, highlighting GE Aerospace and five others (Heico, Howmet Aerospace, Eaton, Vertiv, and nVent) as beneficiaries with generally high buy ratings versus the S&P 500.
Rolls Royce has secured a contract to provide technology for the next-generation US Air Force's nuclear-blast resistant 'doomsday' planes, part of the Survivable Airborne Operations Centre (SAOC) project. These aircraft, which can resist electromagnetic pulses and nuclear blasts, will serve as mobile command centers for the US President and top military leaders during national emergencies. The project aims to replace the ageing E-4B fleet and is expected to be completed by 2036.
Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works has released a new ad showcasing a tailless manned tactical jet concept as part of its 80th-anniversary celebration. The design aligns with the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative and features a similar wing shape and planform as previous NGAD-related posts. The ad also hints at a potential two-crew configuration, highlighting the focus on automation and artificial intelligence in NGAD. Additionally, the video reveals a faceted flying wing unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV)-like design, emphasizing Lockheed's commitment to next-generation unmanned systems. While these concepts offer insights into Skunk Works' future plans, they may not accurately represent the finalized NGAD product or other classified projects.
Rocket engine startup Ursa Major plans to disrupt the solid rocket motors market by utilizing additive manufacturing techniques, commonly known as 3D printing. The company aims to address the broken supply chain and outdated processes in the industry, which have been exposed by the conflict in Ukraine. Ursa Major intends to develop motors ranging from 2 to 22.5 inches in diameter and has already tested a six-inch pathfinder prototype. The company has an undisclosed U.S. government customer and aims to supply motors to the Department of Defense while partnering with other manufacturers. Ursa Major is one of several startups attempting to enter the solid rocket motors business, challenging the dominance of incumbents like Northrop Grumman and Aerojet Rocketdyne.
Aerospace startup JetZero has been selected by the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit to build and fly a prototype aircraft called the Z-5, featuring a blended wing body design. The fuel-efficient aircraft, resembling a B-2 Spirit bomber, aims to offer greater range and fuel efficiency, potentially replacing the Air Force's C-5 and C-17 transport aircraft or the KC-46 tanker. If successful, the Z-5 could significantly reduce the Air Force's fuel expenses and environmental footprint. The project also holds potential applications for commercial air travel.
France has successfully conducted the first demonstration flight of its V-MAX hypersonic glider, launching it from a sounding rocket and performing maneuvers over the Atlantic Ocean. The test, which contained numerous technological innovations, is part of France's hypervelocity roadmap and may contribute to its future deterrent plans. The V-MAX project, led by ArianeGroup, faced development delays but has now taken a significant step forward in exploring hypersonic flight capabilities.
