Pratt & Whitney Engine Reveal Hints at NGAD F-47 Stealth Fighter

Pratt & Whitney’s release about the XA103 adaptive-cycle engine includes imagery of a sixth‑generation, tailless, blended‑wing fighter with front canards, dorsal refueling, and thrust‑vectoring exhaust—design elements closely aligned with the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program and the anticipated F‑47. While officials say the rendering is not a formal reveal, the visuals suggest the propulsion and airframe concepts intended for NGAD, which envisions a crewed fighter operating as part of a “family of systems” with unmanned aircraft. Boeing was selected to develop NGAD in 2025, with first flight targeted around 2028 and fielding in the 2030s.

Stavatti's Mach-4 SM-39 Razor: A bold NGAD-era fighter concept (not in service)

Private Stavatti Aerospace is marketing the SM-39 Razor as a sixth‑generation, Mach 4 air‑dominance/interceptor concept for NGAD, featuring a distinctive triple‑fuselage design, variable‑cycle engines, advanced materials, and multiple configurations (single-seat, two-seat, and unmanned AI-enabled). The design emphasizes extreme speed and internal bays for stealth, but raises questions about radar signature, external stores, and how cockpit control would work with autonomous teammates. It is a concept, not a current Air Force fighter in service under NGAD.

"Skunk Works Unveils Futuristic Tailless NGAD Fighter Design in Bold Ad"

Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works has released a new ad showcasing a tailless manned tactical jet concept as part of its 80th-anniversary celebration. The design aligns with the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative and features a similar wing shape and planform as previous NGAD-related posts. The ad also hints at a potential two-crew configuration, highlighting the focus on automation and artificial intelligence in NGAD. Additionally, the video reveals a faceted flying wing unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV)-like design, emphasizing Lockheed's commitment to next-generation unmanned systems. While these concepts offer insights into Skunk Works' future plans, they may not accurately represent the finalized NGAD product or other classified projects.

Northrop Grumman CEO: No Bid for NGAD Fighter, Focuses on Other Opportunities

Northrop Grumman has announced that it will not compete to be the prime contractor for the US Air Force's Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, but remains open to competing in the Navy's sixth-generation fighter program. While Boeing and Lockheed Martin are believed to be competing for NGAD, Northrop has decided not to respond to the request for proposals as the prime contractor. However, the company may still participate as a second-tier partner. The Air Force plans to select a contractor for NGAD in 2024, aiming to replace the F-22 fighter with a sixth-generation aircraft that possesses enhanced lethality and survivability in highly-contested environments.

House Draft Bill Impacts NGAD, F-15EX, F-22, and ARRW Programs.

House Draft Bill Impacts NGAD, F-15EX, F-22, and ARRW Programs.

The House Armed Services Committee chairman's mark of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act slashes nearly a third of the Air Force's request for funding for the Next Generation Air Dominance program, amounting to $550 million. However, the draft NDAA does not appear to put that $550 million directly back into the F-22 program. Instead, the bill notes the $550 million as a "deferment" from the Air Force's $2.326 billion request for NGAD. The full committee will meet to vote on amendments and approve the NDAA on June 21.

US Air Force Launches Competition for Next-Gen Fighter to Replace F-22 Raptor.

The US Air Force has released a classified contract solicitation for the engineering and manufacturing phase of the development of a new stealth six-generation crewed tactical jet as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance modernization initiative. The NGAD combat jet is expected to be a direct successor to the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter, but serve in a much more expansive role than its predecessor. The competition to win this contract will be immensely heated as it could very well be the last advanced manned tactical fighter-like aircraft built for the United States Air Force.

"US Air Force to Select Next-Gen Fighter in 2024"

The US Air Force has begun soliciting proposals for its Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter, with the goal of awarding a contract for the jet in 2024. The NGAD program will replace the F-22 and will include enhanced lethality and the abilities to survive, persist, interoperate, and adapt in the air domain. The Air Force is requesting billions of dollars over the next five years for NGAD R&D efforts, with an initial buy of 200 planned. The fighter will be powered by an adaptive engine developed through the Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion program. The Air Force plans to field the fighter by the end of the decade.

"Unveiling Northrop Grumman's Futuristic Stealth Fighter Design"

Northrop Grumman has released a new advertisement featuring what appears to be its notional Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) crewed platform concept, which is assumed to be a large, stealthy, and long-range tactical jet with no vertical tails and top-mounted low-observable air intakes. The design features a B-2-like 'beak' nose and a single pilot cockpit. The NGAD program includes the development and production of potentially thousands of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCAs), new weapons, sensors, networking and battle management capabilities, lasers, advanced jet engines, and more. The Air Force and Navy also have parallel initiatives in developing their own NGAD programs, inclusive of the above components.
