Indigenous territory in Brazil sees fatal shooting of illegal gold miners.

Four illegal gold miners were shot dead in an exchange of gunfire after they ambushed Brazilian police and environmental protection agents on Yanomami lands in the Amazon rainforest. The Yanomami reservation has been invaded by more than 20,000 miners, and the area scarred by wildcat gold mining increased by 46 percent in 2021. The Yanomami have accused the miners of sowing violence and bringing an explosion of malaria and other infectious diseases. The Brazilian government has resumed raids to remove illegal miners, and President Lula has pledged zero tolerance for mining on Indigenous land protected by Brazil’s constitution.
