NASA and JAXA's XRISM mission has provided its first glimpse into the X-ray universe, revealing detailed chemical compositions of a supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud and capturing an image of a galaxy cluster undergoing a merger. The mission's Resolve instrument has exceeded expectations in spectral resolution, although it faces an issue with an unopened aperture door. XRISM's Xtend instrument offers a wide field of view, showcasing its capabilities even before the mission's regular operations commence in 2024. The mission is a collaboration between JAXA, NASA, and with ESA participation, and is currently inviting proposals for observations.
