Uncovering Hidden Methane Emission Origins: Scientists' Breakthrough Discovery

Scientists have identified previously unknown sources of methane emissions in Hamburg, Germany, primarily from human activities such as leaking gas pipelines and incomplete combustion. Using a mobile sensor network, the researchers detected methane leaks and other sources, including an oil refinery and a nearby cattle farm, which were highly underestimated in emission inventories. The findings aim to update and enhance emission maps for better understanding and management of methane emissions, which have a significant impact on global warming. Methane, the second most prevalent greenhouse gas, has a global warming potential over two decades that exceeds carbon dioxide by over 80 times.
