"Promising Results: CRISPR Gene Editing Shows Potential as HIV Cure"

Excision BioTherapeutics has shared data from the first human clinical trial of a CRISPR cure for HIV, called EBT-101. The treatment instructs a CRISPR system to target and eliminate the HIV hiding in a person's cells. The trial involved three participants who had undetectable levels of HIV prior to starting the study. None of the patients experienced serious adverse effects from the CRISPR therapy, and the four mild adverse effects observed resolved on their own. The primary purpose of the trial was to test the safety and tolerability of the therapy, with plans to have eligible participants stop taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) to see if their HIV rebounded. More trial data is expected to be presented in 2024.
