"Teenage Boy Becomes First Person Cured of Deadly Brain Cancer"

A 13-year-old boy from Belgium, Lucas Jemeljanova, has become the first person in the world to be cured of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a deadly form of childhood cancer, through a clinical trial using the chemotherapy drug everolimus. His tumor completely disappeared, and seven other children on the same trial are considered 'long responders.' Scientists are now studying the genetic abnormalities of patients’ tumors to recreate Lucas’ genetic differences in the lab and find a drug with a similar effect on tumor cells, but caution that this process could take 10-15 years.
