FDA Identifies Cinnamon Processor as Source of Contaminated Applesauce

Ecuadorian officials have identified a processor, Carlos Aguilera, as the likely source of the lead contamination in recalled applesauce products tied to hundreds of possible lead poisoning cases in the U.S. The FDA stated that it has limited authority over foreign ingredient suppliers and cannot take direct action in this case. The investigation and legal proceedings to determine ultimate responsibility for the contamination are ongoing. The FDA is exploring the possibility of economically motivated adulteration and has received about 90 reports of possible lead poisoning cases, with the CDC investigating a total of 413 cases from 43 different states, of which 100 are confirmed.
