The Environmental Impact of Electric Vehicle Tires

Electric vehicle (EV) tires produce up to 20% more pollution than their gas-powered counterparts, emitting chemicals and microplastics into the environment. The weight and torque of EVs, which accelerate faster and weigh more than gas cars, contribute to increased tire wear and emissions. A study comparing the Tesla Model Y and the hybrid Kia Niro found that the Tesla produced 26% more tire emissions. Tires are the second leading source of microplastic pollution in oceans. Experts suggest moving towards smaller, lighter vehicles, such as hybrids, to address the environmental impact of EVs.
