California and Truck Manufacturers Reach Historic Deal to Phase Out Diesel Big Rigs

California has reached a deal with major truck manufacturers, including General Motors and Daimler Truck North America, to phase out the sale of new diesel big rigs by 2036. The agreement, called the Clean Truck Partnership, aims to achieve 100% zero-emissions medium- and heavy-duty trucks on the road by 2045. The deal provides flexibility for manufacturers during the transition and requires the California Air Resources Board to give them sufficient lead time and regulatory stability. In return, manufacturers have committed to meeting California's standards regardless of any legal challenges. However, concerns remain about the lack of infrastructure for zero-emission trucks. California is investing $10 billion to support the transition to clean energy trucks and infrastructure.
