Other factors include a strong roster of restaurants that bring in visitors and a safe and clean environment. In contrast, San Francisco mall foot traffic has fallen sharply, down 42% in 2022 compared to 2019.

Downtown SF mall closures signal nationwide trend.

Westfield is pulling out from operating San Francisco's biggest mall, the San Francisco Centre, citing "challenging operating conditions," and the Cinemark Century SF Centre 9 theater will go dark this week. This follows a string of announced retail closures in downtown SF, including Nordstrom, Whole Foods, Parc 55, Hilton, Old Navy, and Cole Hardware. Businesses have cited shoplifting, deteriorating street conditions, working-from-home, reduced foot traffic, and a shift toward online shopping as the main contributors to the demise of SF's once-thriving downtown-Union Square retail district. City leaders have floated a variety of solutions, but the path to recovery remains "clouded."

Westfield and co-owner Brookfield Properties have surrendered the San Francisco Centre mall to its lender, leaving city residents wondering what will happen to the downtown shopping center. The mall's departure was likely clinched by the closure of its well-known Nordstrom outlet, which signaled that Westfield would struggle to generate enough revenue to pay its loan, estimated at $558 million. A future property owner will have to get creative to bring back revenue and foot traffic, and it could take five to seven years to see the next iteration of the building emerge.
