Former Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes revealed that Joe Montana expressed interest in playing with Barry Sanders in Detroit in 1993, but the opportunity never materialized due to the team's general manager dismissing Montana as too old. Instead, Montana went on to have successful seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, while the Lions made the playoffs but never advanced beyond the wild card round. Sanders, although missing out on playing with Montana, received numerous individual honors and had a statue built in his honor by the Lions.
