"Scientists Unveil Secret Behind Butterfly Wing Colors"

Researchers at the University of Sheffield and the Central Laser Facility have discovered that the protein actin is crucial in forming the vibrant colors of butterfly wings by orchestrating the arrangement of colorful structures in the scales. Using high-resolution microscopy, they observed that denser actin bundles create more reflective ridges, and altering these structures can cause colors to fade. This discovery could inspire new technologies in sensing, diagnostics, and sustainable paints. The study was published in Nature Communications.

"The Cow": Astronomers Discover Flattest Space Explosion on Record

Astronomers have discovered the flattest explosion ever seen in space, which is shaped almost like a disc. The explosion has been classified as a Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT), an extremely rare class of explosion that is much less common than other kinds. Scientists are still not sure about how bright FBOT explosions occur but this new observation could help them understand the rare phenomena better. The researchers plan to conduct more surveys of such celestial outliers with the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, hoping to discover more FBOTs to further understand them.
