"Record Number of Firearms Intercepted at US Airports in 2024 Q1, TSA Reports"
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported intercepting over 1,500 firearms at airport security checkpoints in the first quarter of 2024, a slight decrease from the previous year despite an 8% surge in flyers. The agency emphasized that even one firearm at a checkpoint is too many, and highlighted the importance of properly packing and declaring firearms in checked baggage. TSA does not confiscate firearms but calls local law enforcement to take possession, with potential civil penalties of up to almost $15,000. Notably, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport had the highest number of firearms found in carry-ons last year.
