Texas Vehicle Inspections End January 2025: Key Changes Ahead

Starting January 1, 2024, Texas drivers of non-commercial vehicles will no longer need annual state inspections for registration, but emissions tests will still be required in certain populous counties. House Bill 3297, passed in 2023, also introduces a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee to be paid during registration. The Texas Department of Transportation has released public service announcements to inform residents about these changes.

"Deadly School Bus Crashes Raise Safety Concerns in Texas"

The site of a fatal school bus crash in Texas had nearly 130 crashes since the start of 2022, with ongoing concerns about speed and reckless driving in the area. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation revealed at least 128 crashes on a 7.5 mile stretch of State Highway 21, with four accidents resulting in fatalities and five involving buses. Viewers and officials have expressed safety concerns, and a TxDOT document predicts a 40 percent increase in traffic on Highway 21 over the next two decades.

Dallas Traffic Deaths: High Speed Limits and Bad Road Designs Under Scrutiny

Experts and road safety advocates are questioning whether high speed limits and bad road designs contribute to the high number of traffic deaths in Dallas. They argue that Texas road design and speed limit rules encourage higher speeds and prioritize moving traffic fast over safety. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been criticized for designing roads to accommodate speeds higher than the posted limit, leading to a feeling of discomfort for drivers who follow the speed limit. Some safety advocates believe that the "85th percentile rule" used by TxDOT to set speed limits encourages engineers to raise the speed limit based on the fastest drivers, potentially resulting in unsafe speeds. The federal government has moved away from using this rule, and TxDOT has stated that they will incorporate other factors into determining speed limits. However, the process to change speed limits on state highways is frustrating and time-consuming, leaving dangerous roads unchanged and potentially leading to more deaths and injuries.

Austin Landmarks Face Uncertain Future Amid I-35 Expansion

Nature's Treasures, a popular crystal store in Austin, is being forced to move due to the expansion of I-35. The Texas Department of Transportation plans to widen the highway and build a rail bridge, requiring the store's property. While TxDOT will cover some moving costs, there are limits on reimbursement for expenses such as setting up a new store. Nature's Treasures expects a drop in business during the relocation and construction period, and it will not be compensated for any lost sales. The store is hoping to negotiate a timeline that allows them to stay until next summer.

Major Traffic Disruptions Expected as I-10 Faces Multiple Closures

The Texas Department of Transportation has announced a 48-hour road closure along I-10 in West El Paso this weekend as part of the I-10 Widening West project. Westbound traffic will be closed from Redd Road to Vinton, with drivers being redirected to North Desert Boulevard. The closure is necessary to switch westbound traffic onto the newly built driving surface. The freeway will reopen on Tuesday, August 8, with westbound thru traffic on the new driving surface. Exit ramps to Redd Road, Transmountain Road, and Vinton Road will be open, while on-ramps will be closed until north of Vinton Road. The project aims to widen I-10 from two lanes in each direction to three and improve on-ramps and off-ramps in West El Paso County.

Protesters disrupt I-35 North construction groundbreaking.

The Texas Department of Transportation has begun construction on the I-35 Capital Express North project, which will add one non-tolled, high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction along the interstate between SH 45 North and Hwy 290 in north central Austin. However, protesters from Rethink35 were on site to push for a study of alternatives, including rerouting non-local traffic and completely replacing the highway with a boulevard. TxDOT Austin District Engineer, Tucker Ferguson, said that the expansion is necessary due to the growth in the region and the expected doubling of the population in the next 20 to 25 years. The project is expected to be completed in late 2028.
