Rising Global Temperatures Amplify Ocean Wave Intensity, Reveals Seismic Data
Seismic data collected over the past four decades shows that ocean waves are gaining strength as the planet warms due to global warming. The increase in wave energy is attributed to rising storminess caused by higher ocean swell and increasing global temperatures. The study found that globally averaged ocean wave energy has been increasing at a median rate of 0.27% per year since the late 20th century, with a faster increase of 0.35% per year since 2000. These findings highlight the intensification of storms and waves as a result of climate change, posing a warning for coastal communities and emphasizing the need for climate mitigation and coastal resilience strategies.
