Shohei Ohtani hits a 493-foot home run, the longest of the 2023 MLB season, in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ohtani's 30th homer of the season came in June, making him just the fourth player in American League history to hit 15 homers in the month. The blast also set a new record for the Los Angeles Angels, surpassing Mike Trout's previous longest-hit homer. Ohtani's incredible performance in June included a .394 batting average, 15 homers, and 29 RBIs, along with four starts on the mound. He leads the league in several categories and is a frontrunner for the AL MVP award.
Byron Buxton made history in a 6-0 victory over the Red Sox at Target Field by becoming the first hitter in the Statcast era to hit multiple homers of 460 feet or longer in one game. Buxton's pair of blasts also marked the two longest homers by any Minnesota hitter in 2021. He had been in a deep slump for much of the last month but has now collected extra-base hits in three consecutive games, including a homer as part of a two-hit effort on Tuesday and a double on Wednesday before his two awe-inspiring blasts on Thursday.
Shohei Ohtani hit his American League-leading 21st home run of the season, a mammoth two-run shot to left-center field with an exit velocity of 116.1 mph, making it the hardest-hit home run to the opposite field by a left-handed hitter that Statcast has tracked since coming online in 2015. The Los Angeles Angels lost 6-3 to the Texas Rangers, but Ohtani's performance was impressive, hitting three homers in the series against Texas, including two to the opposite field.
Marlins right fielder Jesús Sánchez made the catch of his life during Wednesday night’s 4-1 victory over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park, robbing Eugenio Suárez of a game-tying grand slam in the ninth inning. According to Statcast, it would’ve been a homer in 11 of 30 Major League ballparks. Sánchez knew the importance of the moment while playing no-doubles defense. Miami had dropped the first two games of the series, being outscored 17-4.
The confusion of Eutaw Street markers at Oriole Park arose when Gunnar Henderson hit a home run estimated to travel 462 feet, longer than any of the listed distances on the Orioles' Eutaw Street plaques. The estimated distance from Statcast is the most accurate measurement available, but it doesn’t mean the ball literally landed 462 feet away from home plate. The plaques are bound to cause confusion as they are apples-to-oranges measurements.
Jarred Kelenic hit a 482-foot home run, the longest in the Statcast era for the Seattle Mariners and the longest in that span at Wrigley Field in the regular season. This was also the second-longest home run hit in the big leagues this season. Kelenic's homer to dead center field was his third home run in as many days, and he finished the six-game road swing with 10-for-22 with three home runs and six RBIs.
