Rare Mosquito-Borne Encephalitis Virus Confirmed in Long Beach, California
Long Beach, California has confirmed its first human case of mosquito-borne St. Louis Encephalitis (SLEV) since 1984. The infected person is currently recovering at home, and no other cases have been identified. SLEV is caused by infected culex mosquitoes and can lead to symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, and tiredness. Severe cases can result in long-term disability or death. Mosquito control efforts and community education are being emphasized to prevent further cases. People are advised to use mosquito repellent, wear protective clothing, eliminate standing water, and maintain their surroundings to reduce the risk of SLEV transmission.
