Uncovering the Mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Scientists have identified potential causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in a new study published in the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology. The study found abnormalities in the 2A/C serotonin receptors responsible for protective sleep functions in the bodies of 70 infants who had died of SIDS. The researchers believe that SIDS is the result of a culmination of the abnormal receptor, developmental timings, and external stressors. The Health Ministry recommends safe-sleep practices, including placing babies on their backs, on a hard mattress, and in their parent's room until the baby is 6 months old.
