Hong Kong Makes First Arrests Under New Security Law

Hong Kong has made its first arrests under a new security law, detaining six people, including activist Chow Hang Tung, for social media posts allegedly inciting hatred against Beijing. The arrests, linked to the Tiananmen Square anniversary, could result in up to seven years in prison. The law, expanding on the 2020 national security law, has raised concerns about further erosion of civil liberties. Amnesty International condemned the arrests as an attempt to suppress peaceful commemoration of the Tiananmen crackdown.

"Hong Kong's Ongoing Transformation: Push for New National Security Laws"

Hong Kong officials announced plans to enact a long-shelved security law aimed at curbing foreign influence and expanding the definition of offenses like stealing state secrets and treason, echoing mainland Chinese treatments of those offenses. The move is expected to further silence dissent in the once-freewheeling Chinese territory, with the proposed law laying out five major areas of offenses and the city's leader citing threats posed by foreign intelligence organizations. Critics fear the law will ensure a further decimation of human rights in Hong Kong.

Inside the Bars: Exclusive Look at Hong Kong's Imprisoned Pro-Democracy Publisher

Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy activist and former newspaper publisher in Hong Kong, is being held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day in a maximum-security facility while awaiting trial. Exclusive photos obtained by the Associated Press show Lai looking thinner and spending his limited exercise time alone in a small enclosure surrounded by barbed wire. Lai, who faces charges under Beijing's security law, is accused of colluding with foreign forces and conspiring to call for sanctions against Hong Kong or China. He has been denied the right to hire a British defense lawyer, and his trial has been postponed until September. Lai's son expressed pride in his father's refusal to be silenced, despite the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.

The Increasing Risk of Doing Business in China for US Companies.

The risks of doing business in China are increasing for foreign companies as Chinese authorities exercise their power under a new security law. The offices of Capvision, a consulting firm with offices in New York and Shanghai, and two American firms have been raided in recent weeks. All three companies did business gathering information on Chinese companies for U.S. investors. The increasing crackdown by Chinese authorities makes it politically very risky for foreign businesses, and investors worry that the new counterespionage law may be used as a political weapon to punish certain firms by redefining legitimate due diligence as spying.
