"Tragic Toll: Over 950 Migrants from 14 Countries Perish in Desperate Sea Journey to Spain"

A Spanish migrant rights group reported that 951 migrants, including 49 children, from 14 countries have died while attempting to reach Spain by sea in the first six months of 2023. The majority of deaths occurred on the Canary Islands route, with a total of 778 fatalities. The group criticized Spain and Morocco for a lack of coordination and delayed rescue operations. Overall, 12,192 people arrived in Spain by boat during this period, a 4% decrease from last year, but with 13 more deaths. Since 2018, over 11,200 migrants have died or gone missing while trying to reach Spain.
