The New York State Board of Regents has voted to ban Native American names, mascots, and logos in public schools, giving districts until June 2025 to comply or risk losing state funding. Indian River Central School District will have to rebrand, which will be an added cost to the district. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has applauded the decision, stating that the cultural appropriation of Indigenous peoples is offensive, inappropriate, and dehumanizing.

The New York State Board of Regents has unanimously approved new rules that will ban the use of Native American culture used by schools, including names, logos, and mascots. The ban was part of its consent agenda and schools with Native American mascots were required to find a replacement since November 2022. Schools are learning environments and choosing to use Native American mascots is a reflection of “the message their choices convey to students, parents and their communities.”
