Scientists in Canada have discovered a way to transform dormant Müller glial cells into tissues that work like cone photoreceptors, which are required for color perception and visual acuity. While the process has only been tested on mice cells, it could eventually be developed into a therapy that can restore vision in people. The process could eventually be adapted to work in humans, without the need to transplant any new cells. The research has been published in PNAS.
Researchers have developed a new form of omega-3 fatty acid known as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that can enter the retinal tissue, which could be used to reduce the risk and potentially treat some retinal diseases. The retina and brain have the highest concentration of DHA, which has to be provided through diet or supplementation. The new form of DHA, called LPC-DHA, has been tested in mice and shown to be superior to other forms of DHA supplementation. Low levels of DHA have been found in the retinas of individuals with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and Alzheimer's disease.
