Nevadans can now receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine at retail pharmacies without a prescription, following new guidance from the Nevada Board of Pharmacy and statements from CVS, which is offering the vaccine in multiple states, with plans to expand once federal recommendations are made.
As major pharmacy chains like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid close hundreds of stores, Black and Latino communities, as well as rural areas in states like Alaska, Oregon, and New Mexico, are disproportionately affected. These closures exacerbate existing "pharmacy deserts," limiting access to essential healthcare services and trusted advice, especially for those who rely on pharmacies for quick medical consultations and chronic disease management. Rising costs, falling prescription reimbursements, and theft are among the reasons for the closures, which are leaving vulnerable communities without crucial healthcare resources.
House Democrats have urged Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Safeway, and Health Mart to publicly commit to selling the prescription abortion pill mifepristone at their retail pharmacies. Pending lawsuits have jeopardized mifepristone's approval in the US, and for now, it is the most common method to terminate a pregnancy in the country. The five companies have been silent for months on whether they will get certified to sell mifepristone under an FDA program that monitors how the medication is distributed and used by patients.
