NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter completes longest flight ever after communication interruption

NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter is set to make its 68th Red Planet flight this weekend, aiming to cover a distance of 2,717 feet (828 meters) on Mars, which is more than half a mile. This would surpass its current distance record of 2,310 feet (704 m). The helicopter will also target a top speed of 22.4 mph (36 kph), tying its velocity record, and reach a maximum altitude of 33 feet (10 m) above Mars' surface. Ingenuity has been serving as a scout for NASA's Perseverance rover, which is searching for signs of ancient Mars life.

Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Achieves Record-Breaking 50th Flight

NASA's Ingenuity helicopter completed its 50th flight on Mars, surpassing all expectations since its first flight in April 2021. The chopper has flown for more than 89 minutes and 7.1 miles, achieving a new altitude record of 59 feet during its latest flight. Ingenuity has transitioned from a technology demonstration to an aerial scout for the Perseverance rover as it explores an ancient lake and river delta on Mars. The helicopter team is already planning its next set of flights, and its data has provided engineers with valuable insights for future Mars helicopters.
