Canadian officials have traced a Salmonella outbreak to raw pet food and possible contact with cattle. Since July 2020, 40 people have been confirmed to be infected with the extensively drug-resistant Salmonella I outbreak strain. Thirteen patients required hospitalization, and almost half of the cases involved children aged 5 and younger. The outbreak strain has also been found in sick dogs and cattle, with some animals dying. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends against feeding raw pet food to pets, especially in households with young children or individuals with compromised immune systems.
