"Telegram's Risky Offer: Free Premium Subscription Comes with Privacy Nightmare"

Telegram is offering a free premium subscription in exchange for users opting in to relay up to 150 texts per month, which could potentially expose their phone numbers to random recipients. This raises privacy and security concerns, as well as the risk of harassment or unauthorized actions. The company's terms and conditions absolve them of liability for any resulting inconvenience or harm, making it clear that users should carefully consider the potential repercussions before participating in the program.

"X Launches Audio and Video Calling for Android Users"

X, formerly Twitter, is expanding its audio and video calling capabilities to Android users, following their iOS launch last October. Any user can receive calls, but only X Premium subscribers can make them. The feature can be enabled or disabled in the app's settings, with options to restrict who can contact the user. X Premium subscriptions start at $3 per month, but it's unclear which tier the outbound calling perk is locked behind. This move is part of X's strategy to attract new subscribers as ad sales have declined, similar to tactics used with other features.

YouTube Implements Site Slowdowns for Users with Ad Blockers

YouTube has begun implementing slowdowns for users with ad blockers enabled, prompting a pop-up message that violates the platform's terms of service and suggesting users disable their ad blockers. The site also slows down when an ad blocker is detected, leading to a laggy and unresponsive experience. This move aims to encourage users to either disable ad blockers or upgrade to a premium subscription to avoid ads.

YouTube's Crackdown on Ad Blockers: Testing Limits and Threats

YouTube is conducting an experiment to limit the usage of ad blockers by asking users to disable them or purchase a premium subscription after watching three videos. Users have reported receiving warning messages and having their video playback blocked if they continue to use ad-blocking extensions. YouTube stated that this experiment is aimed at encouraging viewers to allow ads or try YouTube Premium, and in extreme cases, it may disable playback for users who don't comply. This is not the first time YouTube has experimented with pushing users towards premium subscriptions, as it previously tested paid plans for 4K videos and unskippable ads.

Spotify to Introduce Costlier HiFi Audio Subscription Plan

Spotify is reportedly launching a HiFi tier with lossless music streaming through a "Supremium" plan later this year, which might cost more than the current premium plan of $9.99 per month. The plan will also include access to audiobooks and will first launch in non-U.S. markets. The company first announced the HiFi tier back in 2021, but the launch has been delayed. The costlier plan might not necessarily push the subscriber number by a lot, but it should increase the average revenue per user and add value to people who want to access lossless music from Spotify.

Elon Musk's Twitter removes New York Times' verification

Twitter has removed the verification check mark from the main account of The New York Times after the newspaper refused to pay for verification of its institutional accounts. Twitter CEO Elon Musk had set a deadline for verified users to buy a premium Twitter subscription or lose their check marks. The Times said it would not pay for verification, and Musk tweeted that the Times' check mark would be removed. Other Times accounts still had check marks, as did multiple reporters for the news organisation. The costs of keeping the check marks range from $8 a month for individual web users to a starting price of $1,000 monthly to verify an organisation, plus $50 monthly for each affiliate or employee account.

Twitter VIPs Upset Over Elon Musk's Blue Check Mark Policy

Twitter users who were verified for free, including celebrities and journalists, could lose their blue check marks if they don't pay for a premium subscription, which costs up to $11 a month. Twitter's billionaire owner and CEO, Elon Musk, has been pushing for more people to pay for the service, arguing that the blue verification marks have become an undeserved status symbol for elite personalities and news reporters. However, some users, including William Shatner and Monica Lewinsky, have balked at the idea of paying for something that was previously free. The move also raises concerns about impersonation and the spread of misinformation on the platform.
