"Baltimore Bridge Disaster: Uncovering Common Conditions"

An analysis of U.S. Coast Guard data reveals that over the past 22 years, there have been over 6,000 incidents of ships losing power, propulsion, or steering, with at least 900 occurring near bridges. These incidents, while mostly routine, have occasionally resulted in major or significant damage to both ships and structures. The frequency of such malfunctions has been on the rise, attributed to factors such as machinery damage or failure, delayed maintenance, and supply chain delays in getting spare parts. The article also highlights the potential causes of power outages, the risks to life and property, and the need for extra precaution when ships navigate near critical infrastructure.

Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn forced to evacuate patients and close after storm-related damage

Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, is evacuating over 100 patients to other facilities after losing power due to torrential rains. The hospital had to switch to a backup generator, but repairs are needed, which could take several days. Critical patients and those in the intensive care unit and birthing center were transferred first, with the remaining patients being relocated as beds are found at other facilities. Some patients have been transferred as far as the Bronx and Queens. The hospital's electrical infrastructure was damaged, but there is no timeline for when patients can return.

IAEA Director General's Statement on Ukraine Crisis

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported the presence of directional anti-personnel mines on the outskirts of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The mines were found in a restricted area controlled by the military and facing away from the site, but their presence is inconsistent with IAEA safety standards. The IAEA team has been conducting inspections and walkdowns at the ZNPP, requesting access to various areas of interest. The plant experienced a temporary power failure but assured that it did not affect nuclear safety. The plant is transitioning reactor units from cold to hot shutdown, with unit 4 expected to reach hot shutdown status on July 25. The IAEA is closely monitoring the availability of water for cooling the reactors following the destruction of the downstream dam. New IAEA teams have arrived at other nuclear sites in Ukraine, and an IAEA Support and Assistance Mission has been launched to assess radiation safety and nuclear security regarding radioactive sources in the country.
