"Resignations and Reform: The Palestinian Authority's Musical Chairs"

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh resigned under pressure from the US administration to revitalize the PA, paving the way for a new government. Uzbekistan's Leader Set for Overwhelming Win in Presidential Election

Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is expected to win a landslide victory in the snap presidential election, following a constitutional referendum that extended his term from five to seven years. Mirziyoyev, who has been in power since 2016, has introduced political and economic reforms that have eased some of the repressive policies of his predecessor. While there is more freedom of speech and some independent media under his rule, Uzbekistan remains strongly authoritarian with no significant opposition. Mirziyoyev has also focused on improving relations with the West and attracting foreign investment, while maintaining close ties with Russia and China.

Kazakhstan holds snap election one year after deadly unrest.

Kazakhstan is holding a snap election on Sunday, the first since deadly unrest a year ago. The election comes after a wave of violence in January 2022 when provincial protests initially sparked by a fuel price hike engulfed other cities, notably the commercial capital, Almaty, and became overtly political as demonstrators shouted “Old man out!” in reference to former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev initiated reforms to strengthen the parliament, reduce presidential powers and limit the presidency to a single seven-year term. More than 400 candidates, most of them self-nominated, are competing in the single-mandate races, and the national elections commission authorized two additional parties to enter the proportional contest.
