Federal Investigation Targets Tyson Foods and Perdue Farms for Child Labor Violations

The Department of Labor (DOL) is conducting investigations into Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods following reports of alleged child labor and hazardous working conditions at their Virginia facilities. The New York Times Magazine had previously reported on the presence of children, including migrants, on contracted cleaning teams, who were reportedly exposed to caustic chemicals and had to handle discarded chicken parts. The DOL investigations were initiated after the publication of these reports. Both companies have stated their commitment to cooperating with the investigations and maintaining strict policies against employing underage workers. The cleaning service providers, Vincit Group's QSI and Fayette Industrial, are also reportedly under scrutiny.

Federal Investigation Launched into Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods for Alleged Child Labor Violations

The U.S. Labor Department is investigating Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods, two major poultry producers, following reports of migrant children as young as 13 working overnight shifts to clean their plants. The investigation comes after a harrowing account of a 14-year-old boy who suffered a severe injury while working at a Perdue slaughterhouse. Under federal law, such hazardous tasks are prohibited for individuals under 18. Perdue Farms confirmed awareness of the investigation and plans to cooperate, while Tyson Foods stated it was not aware of any inquiry. This federal investigation follows the Biden administration's commitment to combat illegal child labor, which has seen a significant increase in violations in recent years.

Federal Investigation Launched into Perdue and Tyson for Alleged Child Labor Violations

Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods are being investigated by the US Labor Department over reports that migrant children, some as young as 13, were employed to clean their meat-processing plants during overnight shifts. The investigation follows an exposé that revealed a 14-year-old boy had his arm mutilated by a deboning machine at a Perdue-operated chicken slaughterhouse. One-third of the Perdue plant's overnight cleaning crew was reportedly made up of children. The children were employed by a cleaning company, Fayette Industrial, which is also facing a federal investigation. This is not the first time underage workers have been found in dangerous occupations, as the Labor Department previously found children as young as 13 working at a meat processing plant in Nebraska.
