IEA: Fossil fuel demand may peak before 2030, but could extend to 2050 with policy changes

The IEA's latest outlook indicates that global fossil fuel use is expected to peak before 2030 under current policies, with coal near or at peak, oil around 2030, and gas by 2035, while renewable energy sources like solar and wind continue to grow rapidly. However, if policies are abandoned, global warming could reach 2.9°C by 2100, highlighting the importance of policy commitments for climate mitigation.

Texas Power Grid Urges Energy Conservation Amid Record Heat

ERCOT issued a voluntary conservation notice from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday due to extreme heat and forecasted record demand. While not in emergency operations, ERCOT is asking the public and government agencies to reduce energy use. Austin may reach daily record-tying high temperatures of 106° with some of the hottest "feels like" temperatures on record. ERCOT broke the June peak demand record on Monday with 79,304 MW, passing last June's record of 76,718 MW. The current all-time record of 80,148 MW was set last year on July 20, 2022.

Texas Braces for Record-Breaking Power Demand Amid Intensifying Heat Wave

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a weather watch from June 15-21 due to forecasted higher temperatures and higher electrical demand. ERCOT's 6-day Supply and Demand dashboard shows the possibility of a new all-time peak demand record later this week. People are urged to keep an eye on the grid and plan ahead to reduce energy use. ERCOT hopes the TXANS system will help increase transparency and trust.
