Passkeys: The Future of Passwordless Authentication

Originally Published 2 years ago — by Engadget

Passkeys are digital authentication credentials that promise a future without passwords, offering a higher level of security. Tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have been announcing passkey takeovers, but widespread adoption may be slow. Passkeys are unique key pairs for each online service, securely stored on your device, and prevent phishing attacks. They make logging in easier for users and reduce the need to remember multiple passwords. However, passkeys are currently fragmented and lock users into specific service providers. Cross-platform accessibility is expected to improve as companies adopt industry standards. Users are encouraged to switch to passkeys for sensitive accounts, but the transition will be gradual, with passwords still being offered as an option.

1Password has launched Passage, a developer resource to add passkey support to apps and websites with just a few lines of code. Passage includes two different tools: Passkey Complete and Passkey Flex. Passkey Complete completely replaces the existing authentication flow or builds from scratch with a robust solution for passwordless authentication and customer identity management. Passkey Flex upgrades the existing authentication flow so users have the flexibility to sign in with passkeys or their traditional username and password. Pricing is based on the website/app's needs.
