Solomon Islands PM's absence dampens Biden's Pacific summit

The United States expressed disappointment that Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare will not attend a Pacific Islands summit with President Joe Biden next week, as part of Biden's efforts to increase engagement with the Pacific region amid competition with China. The summit with the 18-member Pacific Islands Forum will take place on Monday and Tuesday in Washington, with Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Jeremiah Manele attending instead. Sogavare, who praised China's development cooperation at the United Nations General Assembly, had reached an understanding with President Xi Jinping during a July visit to China. Vanuatu Prime Minister Sato Kilman will also not attend due to a no-confidence vote in parliament.

Leaders will discuss U.S.-Pacific issues such as the climate crisis, trade and economic ties during the summit.

Biden's Overseas Trip and Debt Ceiling Crisis Distract from Geopolitical Agenda.

President Biden spoke with Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea and conveyed his inability to travel to Papua New Guinea due to the need to return to Washington for meetings with Congressional leaders. He emphasized the U.S. commitment to the renewed partnership with the Pacific Islands and invited the Prime Minister and other Pacific leaders to Washington, DC later this year for the second U.S. summit with the Pacific Islands Forum. The leaders can continue discussions around enhancing U.S.-Pacific cooperation on shared priorities including combatting the climate crisis, increasing trade and economic ties, promoting maritime security, advancing sustainable and inclusive development, and increasing people-to-people engagement.
