Young Moms Share Their Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Melissa Bradley, a 32-year-old mother from Michigan, was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer at 28 after experiencing painful sex and lengthy periods. RNA nanodrug technology halts ovarian cancer cell division, say Tel Aviv researchers.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have used RNA nanodrugs to silence a gene that encodes for a protein that causes ovarian cancer to metastasize. The breakthrough provides hope for a possible treatment for aggressive and metastatic cancers resistant to chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The scientists targeted the metastasized ovarian cancer cells with lipid nanoparticles containing RNA for silencing CKAP5. This caused the cells to collapse and achieved an 80% survival rate in animal models (mice). The researchers intend to test the silencing of CKAP5 in a variety of other cancers.

Early Warning Signs of Ovarian Cancer and When to Seek Medical Attention

Ovarian cancer, the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, can be difficult to diagnose early as there are no noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. However, patients may experience abdominal bloating or swelling, pelvic or abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, difficulty in eating or feeling full quickly, and frequent urination. Women who have a family history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer or colorectal cancer, who have a genetic mutation known as BRCA1 or BRCA2, personal history of cancer or endometriosis, who are obese, who have undergone hormone therapy after menopause, or who have never been pregnant are at a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. Regular gynaecological check-ups and pelvic exams are important for detecting ovarian cancer early, especially for women who are at higher risk.
