Oklahoma to Close Injection Wells After 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is shutting down all wastewater injection well sites within a 10-mile radius of the epicenter of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Prague, Oklahoma. The state's seismologist is uncertain about the cause of the earthquake, which occurred in a location near a 2011 magnitude 5.7 earthquake. The decision to close the injection wells is an initial response, and it comes amid concerns about the potential link between wastewater disposal and seismic activity.

OG&E's Power Plant Upgrade Plans Set in Motion

OG&E has filed a proposal with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to replace two power generation units at the Horseshoe Lake Power Plant in Oklahoma County. The current units, which have been active for over 60 years, are becoming increasingly difficult and costly to maintain due to the unavailability of replacement parts. If approved, the new units are expected to be operational by late 2026. OG&E anticipates that once the new units are operational, customers will see an average increase of $2.20 per month on their bills.

Earthquakes continue to rattle Oklahoma's Lincoln County.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission has issued a directive to reduce the amount of oil and gas wastewater allowed to be disposed of within a 10-mile area of where a 4.0-magnitude earthquake was recorded Thursday in Carney. The directive applies to 23 disposal wells that inject into the Arbuckle Formation, which is Oklahoma's deepest formation. The volume reductions and shut-ins will be phased in over a four-week period to avoid a sudden change of pressure that they say theoretically could increase the risk of a seismic event.
