A 22-year-old Connecticut woman lost her leg after being attacked by a shark while snorkeling with a friend near the Blue Haven Resort around Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. She was taken to the hospital and remains in serious condition. It's unknown what type of shark attacked her, but gray reef sharks, nurse sharks, and lemon sharks are common in the area. This is the fourth recorded shark attack in Turks and Caicos, and the first to result in the loss of a limb.
Snorkeler Survives Shark Attack in Maldives
A video of a nurse shark attacking a free diver in the Maldives has gone viral on Instagram. The diver, Carmen Canovas Cervello, was left with a six-inch wound on her shoulder blade. The incident occurred while Cervello was snorkeling and free diving at Vaavu Atoll. The person who filmed the video, Ibrahim Shafeeg, posted it to his Instagram account to remind followers that "accidents happen" while swimming with sharks. Cervello did not seek medical treatment immediately and continued snorkeling.
