"Emerging COVID-19 Variant Amplifies Concerns as Long COVID Surges as a Top Neurologic Disorder in the US"

The CDC is monitoring a new COVID-19 variant with over 30 mutations, raising concerns as hospitalizations increase. Long COVID, which affects one in five COVID patients, has become the third leading neurologic disorder in the US, with symptoms including brain fog, memory problems, fatigue, anxiety, and heart issues. Research suggests that long COVID may be a new autoimmune disease caused by the virus, and women in their forties are particularly affected. While the COVID-19 vaccine saves lives, it does not appear to prevent long COVID. Researchers are studying biomarkers in the blood to understand why symptoms persist in some individuals.

COVID-19 Linked to Dizziness, Fainting, and Heart Palpitations

A new study shows that COVID may be responsible for an increase in POTS, a neurologic disorder that causes dizziness or fainting upon standing. POTS is caused by a sudden reduction in blood flow returning to the heart after standing up, leading people to become dizzy, lightheaded, or even faint. Experts report that more than half of POTS cases are caused by infections. The research was done partially by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Association and published in the Nature Cardiovascular Research. Delayed diagnosis is extremely common, and sometimes POTS can be the first sign of an autoimmune disease.
