Hole Doughnuts in Asheville, North Carolina has been ranked second on Yelp's "Top 100 U.S. Donut Shops 2023" list. The shop offers four flavors, including a seasonal fourth that changes every week, and is known for its interesting topping choices. The owners, Hallee Hirsh and Ryan Martin, are currently aiming to purchase a new building as they currently lease at the West Asheville location. Hole Doughnuts is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

National Donut Day is celebrated every 2 June in the US, with millions of Americans eating their way through over 10 billion donuts made annually. The tradition dates back to World War One, when the Salvation Army's Donut Lassies baked sweet treats for soldiers on the front lines. The first-ever National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago in 1938 as a tribute to the Donut Lassies. The donut, which arrived in America under the Dutch name olykoeks, took on its current name in the mid-19th century. Popular donut chains such as Krispy Kreme, Dunkin and Duck Donuts will offer free items to patrons across the US on National Donut Day.

Dunkin' is offering a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage, Honey Dew Donuts is giving away a free doughnut with any medium drink purchase, and Gourmet Donuts is offering a buy-six-get-six-free deal. Adams Donut Shop is giving away a free doughnut with any drink purchase, while Kane's Donuts is offering a free small cup of coffee with any order of a dozen doughnuts. Krispy Kreme is not available in Massachusetts, but Connecticut and New York residents can get any doughnut free, no purchase necessary.

Yelp has released its second-annual guide of the top 100 donut shops within the U.S. Four Oregon-based donut spots earned a spot on the list, including Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai, Donut Day, Doe Donuts, and Mikiko Mochi Donuts. Pip’s was the highest-ranked Oregon business at No. 15, recognized for its fresh mini donuts and variety of chai flavors. Doe Donuts specializes in vegan treats, while Mikiko Mochi serves dairy-free, gluten-free desserts. Yelp compiled the list based on factors such as total volume and ratings between Jan. 1, 2022, and March 31 of this year.

Rise'n Roll Bakery, a popular doughnut chain with five locations in the Indianapolis area, has been named the winner of nine awards in the Underground Donut Tour's "America's Best Donuts" contest. The Middlebury-based Indiana chain's cinnamon caramel doughnut was voted the greatest cinnamon sugar doughnut in America and the overall fan favorite. Rise'n Roll will offer free cinnamon caramel doughnuts in its stores on June 2 to celebrate National Donut Day.
