Astronomers using the MUSE instrument on the ESO's Very Large Telescope have discovered that galactic winds, which limit galaxy growth and star formation, are a universal phenomenon in galaxies over 7 billion years old. The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument on the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope captured a striking "S" shaped jet of matter expelled from a young stellar object named 244-440 in the Orion Nebula. The curved nature of the jet suggests it may be coming from one star orbiting another star. The MUSE instrument was used to map the distribution of iron, nitrogen and oxygen around the young star, offering valuable insight on how stars are born in massive clouds like Orion.
