The 2023 municipal election results for local races in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and Pittsboro, North Carolina have been reported. Jess Anderson wins the Chapel Hill mayoral race with 59.76% of the votes, while Barbara Foushee becomes the Carrboro mayor with 96.91% of the votes. Mark Bell is elected as the Hillsborough mayor with 97.10% of the votes, and Kyle Shipp becomes the Pittsboro mayor with 95.31% of the votes. The results for town council and board of education seats are also provided.

The City of Portsmouth in New Hampshire has announced the use of an electronic voter check-in system for the upcoming municipal election on November 7. Instead of using a paper voter list, poll workers will be able to quickly confirm voter names and identities on a poll pad. Voters will receive printed confirmations of their authorization to vote, which they will provide to the poll worker distributing ballots. The electronic check-in system is expected to speed up the voting process.

Incumbents and current Charlotte City Council members easily won reelection in the municipal primaries, with only a few competitive races. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles endorsed Wil Russell against incumbent Renee Johnson in the City Council District 4 race, but Johnson ultimately won with 52% of the vote. In District 3, Tiawana Brown won with 60% of the vote. Lyles won the Democratic primary for mayor, and all four current council members won at-large seats. The general election will be held on November 7th.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas won a second term with 80.6% of the vote, while five sitting council members won their races for another four-year term. The KC Tenants Power group endorsed six candidates, with four winning their races. The new city council will tackle issues such as affordable housing and increasing gun violence, as well as big-ticket developments like a potential downtown baseball stadium, the 2026 World Cup, and an urban park above a portion of the downtown loop.

Mayor Quinton Lucas has been re-elected for a second term in a landslide victory against Clay Chastain in the Kansas City, Missouri, municipal election. Five of the six city council incumbents also celebrated relatively easy re-election wins, while seven new members will be sworn into office in August. Six of the newcomers won seats that were vacated due to term limits.

The Fair Election Fund program did not decrease the impact of fundraising and outside spending. In the 14 runoff races for City Council, six involve incumbents who didn’t exceed the 50% threshold.
