"Study Unveils Enormous 'Spider' Pulsar"

Astronomers from Stanford University have conducted joint X-ray and optical observations of the massive "spider" pulsar PSR J2215+5135, revealing new insights into its nature. The study found that the neutron star in the system has a mass of approximately 2.15 solar masses and that the companion star loses mass at a rate of 0.0003 Earth masses per year. The findings suggest that J2215 may eventually become an isolated millisecond pulsar.

Indian-Origin Scientist Shrinivas Kulkarni Wins Shaw Prize in Astronomy

Indian-origin US scientist Shrinivas R Kulkarni has been awarded the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy for his significant contributions to the study of millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other transient astronomical objects. Kulkarni, a professor at Caltech, has played a pivotal role in time-domain astronomy through projects like the Palomar Transient Factory and the Zwicky Transient Facility. The Shaw Prize, which includes a monetary award of USD 1.2 million, will be presented in Hong Kong on November 12, 2024.
