Russian Mercenary Group Wagner Faces Contract Dispute with Putin's Backing
Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed the Defence Ministry's order for mercenary groups fighting in Ukraine to sign contracts with it before July 1, despite the Wagner Group's refusal to do so. Putin also wants the law changed to legalise their activities. The new contract system would much more closely integrate Wagner and its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, into the Defence Ministry's command structure in a subordinate position.
