Meat contaminated with E. coli linked to 480,000+ UTIs in the US annually.

A new genomic technique developed by scientists estimates that foodborne E. coli strains cause between 480,000 and 640,000 urinary tract infections in the US each year. While E. coli is known to cause diarrhea, this study provides strong evidence that harmful strains are transmitted from food animals to humans through the food supply, causing serious illness. The study suggests that producers and the FDA could do a better job of monitoring potentially dangerous pathogens in food, most notably raw meat sold in grocery stores throughout the country.
