"Summer's Visible Supernova: Death of a Star Captured by Radio Astronomers"

A star in the nearby pinwheel galaxy M101 has gone supernova, and the blast is so bright that it can be viewed from an amateur telescope. The supernova recently found in M101, dubbed SN 2023ixf, is the closest one to take place in the past five years, and it was caught early enough that astronomers will be able to observe the death of a star in new levels of detail. The supernova will remain bright in the night sky through the entire summer and will offer new insight into the death cycle of massive stars.

Bright New Supernova Visible to Amateur Astronomers with Backyard Telescopes

A new supernova called SN 2023ixf has been spotted in the Pinwheel Galaxy, also known as M101, which is about 21 million light-years from the solar system. It is visible through any small telescope and can be found by star-hopping from Alkaid in the Big Dipper's handle. The Virtual Telescope will stream live images of SN 2023ixf on May 25, and smart telescopes such as the Unistellar eVscope or eQuinox or Vanois Stellina or Vespera can easily find and image SN 2023ixf just by typing in M101 or "Pinwheel Galaxy" to the smartphone app.

Astrophotographer captures rare close-up of exploding supernova in M101.

Astrophotographer Craig Stocks captured a snapshot of the Type-II supernova SN 2023ixf located near the M101 spiral galaxy, which was discovered by Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki. SN 2023ixf is the closest supernova seen in the past five years and the second closest in the past 10 years. It occurred when a massive star ran out of nuclear fuel and collapsed. Studying this young supernova may provide new insights into how massive stars explode.
