"Rural Russia Protests: Supporters Rally in Capital for Jailed Activist"

Hundreds of people rallied in Russia's Bashkortostan republic in support of jailed activist Fail Alsynov, who is seen as a hero by many ethnic Bashkir people for his advocacy of their language, culture, and rights. Alsynov was sentenced to four years in a penal colony for stirring ethnic hatred, a charge his supporters believe is delayed revenge for his successful environmental campaign. The rare protests have put pressure on regional leader Radiy Khabirov, with concerns over the disproportionate number of ethnic minority men from Bashkortostan being sent to fight in Ukraine. The unrest reflects deep grievances among the ethnic minority and grassroots activism that the Kremlin does not tolerate.

Pentagon leak suspect Jack Teixeira to remain in custody until trial.

Massachusetts Air National Guard member, Jack Teixeira, charged with leaking highly classified military documents will remain in jail while he awaits trial. The judge cited Teixeira’s “fascination with guns,” disturbing online statements, and admonitions by Teixeira’s military superiors about his handling of sensitive information before his arrest. Teixeira is accused of sharing classified military documents on Discord, a social media platform popular with people playing online games. He has been behind bars since his April 13 arrest on charges, under the Espionage Act, of unauthorized retention and transmission of classified national defense information.

Pentagon leak suspect Jack Teixeira to remain in custody until trial.

Jack Teixeira, a Massachusetts Air National Guard member charged with leaking highly classified military documents, will remain in jail while he awaits trial. The decision was made after prosecutors revealed that Teixeira had a history of violent rhetoric and was caught by superiors months before his arrest taking notes on classified information or viewing intelligence not related to his job. The judge cited Teixeira's "fascination with guns," disturbing online statements, and prior admonitions by superiors about his handling of sensitive information as reasons for his detention. Teixeira is accused of sharing classified military documents on Discord, a social media platform popular with people playing online games.

Belgium denies prisoner exchange for jailed Iranian diplomat.

Belgium denies reaching a deal with Iran for a prisoner swap that would free jailed Iranian diplomat Asadollah Assadi in exchange for Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele. Iran's judiciary spokesperson had claimed that an exchange would be done soon, but Belgium's Justice minister Vincent Van Quickenborne called it a false message from a rogue state that specializes in making false statements. Assadi was jailed for 20 years in 2021 over a foiled bomb plot targeting an Iranian opposition group in Paris, while Vandecasteele was arrested in Iran in February 2022 and sentenced to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes on several charges including spying.
