"UAW's Strike Victory: A Game-Changer for Unionism and the Auto Industry"

The United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against the Big Three auto companies has resulted in significant gains for the union, including a tentative deal with Stellantis that will reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois and invest in a new electric vehicle battery plant. This victory goes beyond Belvidere and marks a potential shift toward a more expansive model of unionism that challenges management's control over investment decisions. By asserting control over the firm's investment function, the UAW is reasserting an additional constraint on auto firms' scope of action and forcing them to consider the needs of workers and communities. This victory has implications for the future of the auto industry and the role of unions in shaping company investment decisions.
