Increased Stroke Risk for Women After Infertility Treatment
Women who undergo infertility treatment and become pregnant are at a higher risk of experiencing a stroke in the year following childbirth compared to women who conceive naturally, according to the largest study of its kind. The risk of stroke was highest in the first 30 days after delivery and continued to rise throughout the year. However, the absolute numbers of stroke hospitalizations remained low. While there is no need for alarm, women seeking infertility treatment should be made aware of this possible link. Infertility treatments have been associated with increased risks during pregnancy, including higher rates of pre-eclampsia, placental abnormalities, and preterm birth.
